10 beauty essentials for disguising a hangover

10 March 2014

OBVIOUSLY the best way to avoid hangover hell...

...is to not get quite so battered in the first place, but preventative measures assume some level of planning and foresight and we all know the biggest nights out creep up on us from nowhere.

Even if you're not suffering a banging headache the morning after (with 50% off sharing food there really is no excuse not to line your stomach), a big night out is unlikely to do your complexion any favours.

But if 'just staying in' isn't the answer (and it DEFINITELY isn't the answer!) then what's the best way to at least *look* like you've had a decent night's kip?

I feel like I've spent my entire adult life faking that I've been to bed and these are ten of the beauty products that enable me to join the land of the living each morning...

1. Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm by Clinique - £21

We've all gone to bed drunk and covered in a full face of slap and we all know that we shouldn't, but trust me that waking up with a lovely clean face will already put you ten steps in front on the morning after. There's nothing quite like waking up with lipstick on your chin and welded shut eyelids thanks to skanky lash glue, so WASH YOUR FACE before you go to bed. This Clinique balm is the very best for cutting through every last trace of make-up. Leave the tub on your pillow before you go out so you remember that you MUST wash you face before you conk out. It takes two minutes and really isn't that hard. Worst comes to the worst and you don't remember/bother, then get washing as soon as you wake up. Before any bacon sandwich frivolities.

2. Avocado Eye Cream by Kiehl's - £33

Tired eyes need their knight in shining armour or, in this case, their pulped up avocados in a little white tub. This miracle eye cream will help banish the horrific truth of how tired you really are.

3. Eye Drops by Murine - £4.59

These were the eye drops I relied upon after having laser eye surgery, so if they can deal with the effects of a laser I'm sure they can help soothe the effects of tequila. Bright eyes, be mine!

Okay so this isn't a product recommendation, more some friendly advice: wash your hair. It's all too tempting to forego washing your hair for an extra 15 minutes in bed and just let dry shampoo do all the work, but it's foolhardy. A proper hair wash *will* make you feel better. If you opt for dry shampoo then every time you touch your locks throughout the day you'll shudder with 'last night' memories. Start with a clean slate, literally.

5. Truth Serum by Ole Henriksen - £47

Slather this on after cleanser, toner and eye cream - the orange will zing you awake like nobody's business.

6. Coconut Water by Vita Coco - £2.15

I know you *want* coffee when you're hungover, but your body doesn't. Coconut water is the nectar of the gods when it comes to battling dehydration - and dehydration is the main problem after a big night out. Guzzle this stuff by the carton.

7. Age Arrest by Kate Somerville - $90

I know I shouldn't include a US product in this list but you can get this stuff shipped over easily enough, so if you are in the market for a new moisturiser this then is my absolute hands down favourite. Whatever your favourite moisturiser is though, apply liberally. Your skin is no doubt cross with you that you ordered those last two jugs of woo woos. You need to apologise.

8. Boi-ing Concealer by Benefit - £17.50

They're not lying when they say that this is 'industrial strength', nothing comes close when it comes to hiding bags or blemishes.

9. Perfection Lumière Foundation by Chanel - £36

Once you're all cleaned and prepped you can get to camouflaging! This foundation is my personal hero foundation of choice, offering flawless coverage for 15 hours.

10. Rockateur Blush by Benefit - £23.50

And the last vital ingredient to looking awake is, of course, COLOUR. You need colour in your cheeks if you're going to fake like a pro. This blusher has hints of rose *and* gold, so you'll look wide awake in no time. Keep in your handbag for regular top-ups.
