The Latest Facebook Update

21 May 2014

It is the worst. Facebook has removed 'top stories' from the news feed on iPhones and it's incredibly frustrating. Like, the most annoying thing EVER.

BACKGROUND

Ever since I first signed up to the social networking site nearly 7 years ago, I have always viewed the stream of posts and updates by my friends and connection (let's face it, they are not all friends) in a linear fashion. Newest on top, work your way through them until you are back to where you last looked through.

Now they have changed this for iPhone users.

OMG, WHAT'S HAPPENED?

Yes, you can now say goodbye to the normal and easiest view you have grown to understand and love and welcome the forever annoying "Top Stories" - a nonsensical, sporadic display of posts and updates with no care for time or order. It's like someone has mixed your clean clothes with the dirty laundry and you have to sift through to try and guess what's fresh. DISASTER.

WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?

Currently this has happened iPhone apps and other mobile/tablet formats but will be rolled out to the web page and all remaining portals. The thought process being that adverts and click through/paid search promotions can be carefully and more effectively laid out and embedded amongst your news feed.

The "most recent" option allows users to control what they see - something they obviously don't want!

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

There is still a way to access this feed however it's not as straightforward as it was closes itself every time you minimise the app.

  • Click on the "more" tab in the bottom right hand corner.
  • Scroll down to "feeds" which is a greyed out bit of text in-between coloured applications.
  • There is "most recent" tab here which will take you to a new page with the old format.

BUT I DON'T LIKE THIS NEW WAY

Me either.
